Energy Resilience @ the Ludwig Foundation of Cuba
FoH partnered with the Ludwig Foundation of Cuba to install a state-of-the-art solar and battery system in their Vedado headquarters
In 2025, Friends of Havana partnered with the Ludwig Foundation of Cuba to install a state-of-the-art solar and battery system in their Vedado headquarters, creating a model of cultural resilience in the face of Havana’s energy crisis. The Foundation, long recognized as one of Cuba’s leading independent cultural institutions, had been forced to close its doors several days a week because of rolling blackouts in Havana.
With 20 solar panels installed on their rooftops and an 8 kW battery system, Ludwig can now operate a full five-day schedule regardless of grid conditions. Exhibitions, film screenings, educational workshops, and other cultural events continue without interruption, ensuring that the Foundation remains a hub for Havana’s young artists. The system also allows Ludwig to serve as a “community energy hub.” In the event of extended outages, artists, staff, and neighbors will have a place to gather, charge devices, and rely on consistent electricity. The project demonstrates how renewable energy and culture can reinforce one another, demonstrating ecological benefits, resilience, and social infrastructure. By combining technical expertise with international solidarity, Friends of Havana has provided a replicable model for other Cuban institutions seeking to strengthen resilience while advancing Havana’s broader transition toward sustainable energy.
